Running and riding friends,
San Angelo is on the verge of losing theStriders Duathlon, one of the few Texas du's to offer long and short courses ... and an event produced by Jack Weiss, who in my opinion is the best race director in the state. The reason? Participation has fallen to the point that it's no longer financially viable for Jack to continue the race.
There is, however, still a chance we can save Striders. I'm working with Jack on a sports grant application from the Convention and Visitors Bureau to help support the event. In addition, I'm trying to get commitments from 50 local athletes -- and by commitments, I mean a pledge backed by cash -- that theywill enter the race this year on April 22. Having those commitments will serve two purposes: One, it will show local support that could help convince the CVB to support it financially. And two, it will show Jack that San Angelo is as committed to this race as he is.
Please, consider committing by sending me your name and your word that you will enter this race. Once we have the 50 commitments, I'd like to collect the entry fees so that Jack will know, beyond a doubt, that he has 50 fully committed local racers.
If you ride but don't run, or run but don't ride, send me your name anyway; we'll find you a partner.
If you have questions, call me at 234-0014. Better yet text me your pledge (or email it to awilsoneditor@msn.com).
I speak for a lot of us when I say that we do not want to lose a race of this caliber in our own backyard. Thanks, friends.
